Houston Equal Rights Ordinance ("HERO")

The Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO) protects ALL Houstonians from discrimination in employment, housing, and places of public accommodations.

HERO protects all Houstonians
No one should be discriminated against because of their:

1.      Race
2.      Age
3.      Sex
4.      Color
5.      Ethnicity
6.      National Origin
7.      Religion
8.      Sexual Orientation
9.      Disability
10.  Pregnancy
11.  Familial Status
12.  Gender Identity
13.  Genetic Information
14.  Military Status
15.  Marital Status

All major cities have nondiscrimination protections
HERO mirrors federal laws and workplace policies many private employers have in place. In fact, our nondiscrimination ordinance is similar to measures passed by every other major city in the country, that’s why it was supported by more than 80 current and former elected officials, community and non-profit organizations, major corporations, and more than 70 local faith leaders.

Stop the fearmongering
Those fighting to repeal HERO want you to believe that our nondiscrimination ordinance allows men in women’s restrooms. That’s simply NOT true. It is ILLEGAL – with or without HERO – for a man to go into a women’s restroom or a woman to go into a men’s restroom to commit a crime. Anyone who says differently is misleading you.

Let’s be clear
No matter the color of your skin, your age, gender, who you worship, or sexual orientation, every Houstonian deserves the right to be treated equally. That’s exactly what HERO helps ensure.

Like many of you, I thank my parents for instilling in me the value of respect and belief that every person should be treated fairly, civilly, and with dignity. This principle, reinforced by my religious faith, guides my life and motivates me to serve you.
